The Archaeology of Greater Nicoya

The Archaeology of Greater Nicoya is the first edited volume in a quarter century to provide an overview of this fascinating archaeological subarea of Mesoamerica, encompassing Pacific Nicaragua and northwestern Costa Rica. Inhabited by diverse peoples of Mesoamerican origin centuries before Spanish colonization, Greater Nicoya remains controversial in the twenty-first century as scholars struggle to achieve consensus on questions of geography, chronology, and cultural identity. Drawing on approaches ranging from ethnohistory to bioarchaeology to scientific and culture-historical archaeology, the book is organized into sections on redefining Greater Nicoya, projects and surveys, material culture, and mortuary practices. Individual chapters explore Indigenous groups and their origins, extensive summaries of the three largest scholarly archaeological projects completed in Pacific Nicaragua in the last quarter century, clear evidence of Mesoamerican connections from Costa Rica’s Bay of Culebra, detailed histories of lithic analysis and rock art studies in Nicaragua, new insights into mortuary and cultural practices based on osteological evidence, and reinterpretations of diagnostic ceramic types as products of related potting communities and the first definitive identification of production centers for these types. Drawing upon new 14C dates, this volume also provides the most substantial revision of the late pre-colonial chronology since the 1960s, a correction that has critical implications for understanding the prehistory of Greater Nicoya.

Situated Learning

Social anthropologist Jean Lave and computer scientist Etienne Wenger’s seminal Situated Learning helped change the fields of cognitive science and pedagogy by approaching learning from a novel angle. Traditionally, theories of learning and education had focused on processes of cognition – the mental processes of knowledge formation that occur within an individual. Lave and Wenger chose to look at learning not as an individual process, but a social one. As so often with the creative thinking process, a small, simple shift in emphasis was all that was required to show things in an entirely different light. What Situated Learning illustrated – and emphasized – was that learning is dependent on its social situation. Even though the most effective way to learn is through interaction with experts and peers in a community organized around a common interest, the traditional cognitive learning model failed to account for the way in which learners interact with their ‘community of practice.’ The new hypothesis that Lave and Wenger developed was that learning can be seen as a continuously evolving set of relationships situated within a social context. This allowed Lave and Wenger to place discussions of apprenticeship and workplace learning on a new footing – and led in turn to the book’s impressive impact in business and management scholarship.

Anfänglich als allgemeine Netzwerkanalyse informeller communities of practice zur Softwareentwicklung in Twitter gedacht, hat sich die Zielsetzung und somit auch die Problemstellung dieser Studie geändert, nachdem die über Twitter verschickten Nachrichten zur Softwareentwicklung einer ersten Analyse unterzogen wurden. Anhand dieser Analyse wurde deutlich, dass der Großteil der Nachrichten in Twitter, die sich thematisch mit Softwareentwicklung beschäftigen, Stellenangebote von Unternehmen sind. Im weiteren Verlauf werden diese Nachrichten Job-Tweets genannt. Die Frage, die sich bei der Betrachtung dieser Tatsache stellt ist, wieso Unternehmen ihre Mitarbeiter über Twitter rekrutieren. Welche Vorteile bringt diese unkonventionelle Vorgehensweise mit sich und wie effizient ist sie? Da Twitter immer mehr zu einem wichtigen Informationsnetzwerk avanciert, ist diese Taktik der Unternehmen eine genauere Betrachtung wert. Sie zeigt auf, wie ein Dienst wie Twitter professionell von Unternehmen für die verschiedensten Zwecke genutzt werden kann. In diesem Buch wird die Effizienz von Stellenangeboten im Bereich der Softwareentwicklung, die über die Plattform Twitter geschaltet werden, analysiert. Die Vorgehensweise und die Vorteile der Unternehmen werden erläutert. Reicht es, nur die Informationen über die angebotene Arbeitsstelle zu kommunizieren, oder wird eine Art Kommunikationsmechanismus benötigt? Welche Nutzergruppe reagiert auf die in Twitter geschalteten Stellenangebote? Lassen sich diese Nutzergruppen in bestimmter Weise gruppieren? Des Weiteren wird untersucht, wie erfolgreich die Veröffentlichung von Stellenangeboten in Twitter ist.
